A great way of sprucing up old furniture is to give them a fresh coat of paint. You can get pots of furniture paint from paint stores at very affordable prices. Take a large handled flat brush and paint over old chairs and tables in fresh pastel shades of paint. The paints should ideally be brought in pastel shades of light pink, peach, cream, beige, powder blue and white. Give a distressed look to the painted furniture by rubbing sandpaper over some areas. This kind of furniture actually brightens up the room and makes it look larger and more spacious.

Change the Fabric

Simply changing the fabric on the furniture makes a lot of difference to the looks. Try investing in some good vintage fabric like satin, brocade, embroidered silk and change the upholstery on your old sofa, couch and chairs with them. The same old furniture pieces look brand new instantly with a fresh dress. Brocade in particular creates a very rich antique look while striking colors in velvet like red and black also look equally amazing.

Redesign the furniture

If you think that parts of your furniture have become worse for wear and cannot be revamped then try redesigning the furniture completely. For example, if the handles and backrest of old chairs have degraded then chop them off and use just the base. Fix ply edges on the chair bases and put in cushions on the bases to make brand new settees. These can be placed at various corners of your home to create a contemporary relaxed look. Similarly if you see that the ply on your table top has degraded, then strip it off and replace it with new natural wood finish which is in so many vogues nowadays.

Use cushions and runners

Cushions are a great way to take the attention away from old furniture. One of most affordable ways you can spruce up old furniture is to use colorful printed cushions in abundance over sofas, settees, chairs etc. which may hide many imperfections in the furniture and give the room an instant colorful makeover.

Similarly, table runners can take away the eyes from old shabby tabletops. Use runners to cover imperfections in the table top and chipped corners. Put up a gorgeous vase of flowers on the table and just look at the transformation that the old table undergoes.

Now that you know all about these sneaky tips and tricks to glam up your old furniture, it is time to give your home a makeover.
