Modern apartments are now smaller (read cozier) than what they were a decade earlier and most people have to adjust their living space requirements according to the space crunch. Small apartments/ homes with less ventilation and poor lighting make the space look dark and dreary. However the good news is that you can change the way the room looks by using these simple tips.

  1. Light walls and Floors

1

You must have heard of this one before. Light coloured floor and walls make a space seem larger and brighter than it actually is. White colored floors in particular let in a lot of light and space in a dark room because it can reflect light so well and make the area brighter. For the walls you can choose shades like light lemony yellows, cream, icy blue, light pistachio green and pale rose. Avoid using dark colors in a dark room.

2. Use of Accessories Reflecting Light

Accessories which reflect light can make a room seem brighter and prettier. Wall mounted sconces are good in corners which do not get light at all. If you have the space, then do consider using floor lamps and table lamps. Consider hanging big mirrors opposite window containing walls so that light is automatically reflected into the room. Lamps and mirrors can be combined to make a small dark room appear much larger and brighter than it really is.

3. De clutter

Clutter will actually eat up a lot of space and light and make your room appear darker than it actually is. Use furniture with inbuilt storage options if you have too much stuff inside your home which cannot be thrown away. Get rid of excessive furniture inside the room and opt for a clean minimal look. This way the light will actually get a chance to spread without clutter obstructing it all the time.

4. Bright Backsplashes

If you cannot afford to get your room repainted, then a simple investment in a backsplash will work wonders. Choose a backsplash that is themed on blue and white or sea green and blue to reflect the vastness of the ocean or the sky. Putting in a backsplash inside a room can dramatically lift up the appearance of the room by quite a few notches. Many people use backsplashes in small dark rooms to create the illusion of light and space.

5. Sheer Curtains

Sheer curtains in light flowery small prints or in uniform pastel shades let in a lot of light into a dark room. Choose curtains in shades like peach, light pink, powder blue, cream, pearl blush or Victorian white and install them on your windows. Laces curtains also look very pretty and airy, and help filter the light in. Sheer curtains add a touch of grace and feminism in an otherwise drab and dark room. Always choose a length that ends well beneath the window sill for a more elegant look.

Now that you know how to make your dark little room lighter and brighter start renovating now to pretty up your home.
